The Challenge
To make the tremendous body of useful public
domain, freeware and Open Source software available to the wider
public to users of Hewlett Packard UNIX systems not just those
capable of configuring and compiling software.

The Solution
We developed HP’s first internet project
(initially in 1992 when Internet usage was still in its early
infancy) by creating the world’s largest single online archive of
free software for Hewlett Packard UNIX systems and we continue to
develop the archive. Updates to the site are now automatically
distributed to the mirror HP Archive sites in the US and the
Netherlands facilitating ‘local’ access and faster downloads. We
continue to configure and port Open Source packages (in both source
and binary formats) to HP-UX, as well as provide a fully managed
hosting service and remote management of the mirror sites for
Hewlett Packard’s archiving system.
The Results
The archive comprises almost 2,000 software
packages, with over 150,000 free software packages per month being
distributed, reaching over 70 countries.
